La Mata Pedestrian Path Reopens Most Sections After Repairs

The renovation of the pedestrian path in La Mata is progressing well. Residents of the Torrevieja district began enjoying this much-needed infrastructure last week after a challenging construction period.

Last week, workers from Orthem and Avala (Grupo Hozono Global) accelerated their efforts, completing the pavement and installing LED lights in the most frequented stretch. Hospitality establishments and their customers celebrated the completion of the work on social media after a difficult summer.

Councillor for Urban Services, Sandra Sánchez, stated, “Sections are being opened to allow access to shops. It’s difficult to fence off everything that has been built, so traffic is being allowed. Practically everything is open except for the waste pumping area at Calle Virgen del Carmen.”

The government team opened the first section during the high season. Initially, the City Council aimed to open several sections by summer to avoid inconveniences in beach access, but this was delayed as the works nearly halted before summer.

Hoteliers had been pushing for the completion of the work. Some, including a well-known beach bar, opted out of the summer season due to construction at their doors, anticipating reduced sales.

Construction began in September last year after the contract was awarded for 3,929,612 euros, 10% below the base tender budget. The initial completion date was September this year.

Delays were attributed to demands from Costas to move water networks away from the beach sand and supply issues with the pavement material. The project uses technological wood, which is more durable and resistant to humidity and salinity than natural wood. The work was prompted by the wear and tear on the pavement over the past 25 years, leading to numerous falls and trips.
