The Council’s renovation project for the municipal animal shelter has been significantly delayed due to unforeseen circumstances. The project, initially awarded to Urdecon, was forced to halt due to the implementation of new Animal Welfare Law regulations. These regulations mandate a phased approach to the renovation, which was not part of the original plan.

As a result of these changes, the project’s cost has increased by 130,638 euros, bringing the total budget to 1,412,330 euros. The timeline has also been extended by two months, with the works now expected to be completed in 11 months.

The City Council has emphasised that these modifications are necessary to ensure compliance with the new regulations and to maintain the well-being of the animals during the renovation process. The changes include the construction of additional fencing to separate construction phases, the relocation of existing facilities, and the installation of a new wastewater connection.

Despite the delays and increased costs, the Council remains committed to improving the animal shelter and providing a better environment for the animals. The modifications are intended to optimize the renovation process while minimizing disruptions to the animals’ care.
