The City Council will help to meet the high demand for Spanish classes for foreigners. The councillor of International Residents, Gitte Lund, is preparing a contract to reinforce this service. The courses seek to cover part of an overwhelming demand which could increase if the Generalitat decides to dispense with some of the places offered by the Official Language School (EOI).

With a proposal yet to be defined, the classes will be aimed at those registered in Torrevieja, a student profile which, Lund acknowledges, is not looking for an official qualification, but just to know the language for communication needs, and which has a lower cost.

The councillor said that these courses, that are going to be increased, are already taking place, and that the majority of students tend to be retirees from northern Europe and, in recent years, also Ukrainian refugees. It is worth remembering that Torrevieja has already reached 100,000 registered citizens, 50% of which are foreign nationals.

The opposition of PSOE and Sueña Torrevieja, indicates that, by virtue of the communication received by the EOI centres, Torrevieja could possibly lose a good part of the Spanish groups for foreigners and other minority languages or those with low demand.
