- Council states that it will not rush into the project, which it wants to be “to the liking of all Torrevieja residents, more accessible, while retain its appealing identity.
The project to remodel the Plaza de la Constitución is going slowly with the council saying that it does not want to rush the preparation of the project.
In the last Plenary Session, the Councilor for Parks and Gardens, Concha Sala, was asked about the scheme by the spokesperson for Sueña Torrevieja, Pablo Samper. She said that “it is an electoral commitment that we will fulfil without a doubt” but for her “it is a pride and a challenge to undertake such a special work.”
Although she failed to give any special details about the design, she said that she hopes that the final solution “will be to the liking of all Torrevieja residents.”
The councillor stated that it is a file that requires being “more careful if possible.” She said that it is an “emblematic” square, around which the entire urban fabric was connected, after the city was devastated by the earthquake of 1829. “Many Torrevieja residents remember the times when this was the only square there was,” she recalled.
The objective of the refurbishment is to make what is also popularly known as La Glorieta “more accessible.” Currently, it is located high up and can only be accessed by stairs and ramps. The intention would be to eliminate architectural barriers, leaving the square more accessible, particularly for people with reduced mobility.
She promised that “for as long as this government is in place, the Plaza de la Constitución will not lose its identity. With this work, nothing is intended to blur the original and traditional image.”
