Pablo Samper, candidate for mayor of Sueña Torrevieja, says that “in Torrevieja we enjoy good weather and sun most of the year, but when rainfall occurs it usually does so torrentially, causing flooding in some parts of the city, such as Las Torretas, Doña Inés, Playa de Los Locos, San Roque and Avenida Delfina Viudes and Cortes Valencianas”.
There are usually two seasons where heavy rains occur, around September, following summer, and in the Spring, in the April and May months, times when many residents dread due to facing persistent flooding in and around their homes, many of whom are even unable to sell as a result of their disclosure of the problem.
Samper assures that “in Sueña Torrevieja we have a solution: a plan that goes through the construction of storm tanks in the areas where this type of flooding occurs and could alleviate the problems of the neighbours when they try to access their homes, as well as the transit of vehicles”.
Storm tanks could easily be built into roundabouts or municipal lots, creating new green areas on their surface, and might be able to absorb large amounts of rain.
“There is already some project that has been executed in our city, as in the Torreta Florida, but the current government team of the PP has not done enough, but we must act comprehensively and not just put a patch,” said Samper.
Samper adds that “it is not possible that the main access and exit roads are cut when this type of rain occurs, which collapses the city and leaves Torrevieja and some neighbourhoods in deplorable conditions”.
Samper concludes by stating “there are many years dragging this type of problems due to the poor planning of the city that has been done for more than 30 years, where it has been built without having a rainwater network in conditions. It seems that it is something that has to be assumed every time it rains, but from Sueña Torrevieja we do not resign ourselves and that is why we offer real solutions to the problems of Torrevieja in order to improve the quality of the neighbours”.
