The local Charity ‘Alimentos Solidarios’ (Solidarity Foods) served their last meals on Friday, having now closed due to lack of funds. The president, Concha Sala, said that she expects the closure to be temporary, forced upon them because they have not yet received a Torrevieja Council grant which is their main source of income, and therefore they do not have the liquidity to continue.
‘Alimentos Solidarios’ offers 219 daily meals to needy people and families in the municipality of Torrevieja, approximately 370 people of which 117 are children, amounting to a cost of between 6,000 and 8,000 euros per month.
In March 2018, the charity received 42,896 euros from the council to meet their annual expenses but, to date, the municipal aid due for this year has not yet been received. “Until this painful situation is clarified we have to make the difficult and painful decision to close our facilities,” she said.
Sala added that the volunteers will do everything possible to make it only a temporary closure and that they are still working to obtain grants that will allow them to reopen soon in order to continue providing food to so many families in the municipality.
