Fiesta preparations are well underway in Mojácar to honour their Patron, Saint Virgen del Rosario.
The event will take place on the 6th, 7th and 8th of October, with the official programme getting off to a start on Saturday at 6 p.m. with the Indalo Dance Show, which is free to the public and will be held on the Plaza Nueva in the Pueblo. The song and dance show, which is suitable for all ages, is being put on by the French Dance Association, CDA 31, with 50 dancers, singers plus their light and sound team taking part.
As is customary on the actual Patron Saint’s Day, there will be a Holy Mass at 11.30 a.m. on the Sunday in Mojácar’s Santa María Parish Church, officiated by the priest, Miguel Esteban Jerez, with a performance by the soprano Svetlana Alina Polushina and pianist, Esther Peña. Afterwards, the image of the Virgen del Rosario will be carried around the Pueblo streets followed by various officials and numerous local people who always follow the procession along with the town’s Band.
Sunday afternoon is a highlight for many, with the traditional ribbon horseback runs for any couples who wish to participate, whatever their status, keeping alive this centuries old Mojaquera tradition. The event always provides plenty of fun for those competing as well as for the many spectators, with the Band stepping in again to entertain. It all takes place at La Fuente in the Pueblo at 5.30 p.m. with participants gathering to get prepared with their ribbons and horses at their posts at 5 p.m.
Monday October 8th is the day for the seniors of the town, when the local Council will hold a special tribute for them with a party at 2 p.m. at the Marina Playa Hotel. (Tickets are essential for this).
The final Patron Saint Fiesta event is a treat especially for the youngsters, with a showing of the funny movie “Cigüeñas” at 7 p.m. at the Centro de Usos Múltiples. Admission is free, which includes some ‘movie essential’ popcorn for all the children.
