John George, a 37-year-old father of two from Belfast, Northern Ireland, embarked on a holiday to Alicante, Spain, in mid-December 2024. Known for his “happy-go-lucky” nature and as a former champion boxer, John was last in contact with his family on December 14 during a distressing phone call. When he failed to board his flight home on December 18, his family reported him missing, initiating a comprehensive search effort.
Concerned for his safety, John’s family, including his father Billy George and brother Darren George, traveled to Spain to aid in the search. They were joined by a volunteer canine search team from Northern Ireland, K9 Search and Rescue, which assisted in scouring the Costa Blanca region, covering areas such as forestry, scrublands, collapsed buildings, and watercourses. Despite their exhaustive efforts, the search was temporarily paused, with plans for a second visit.
Tragically, on January 7, 2025, Spanish authorities discovered a body under lemon trees near Rojales, approximately 45 minutes south of Alicante. The body was later identified as John George. An autopsy revealed that he had been both stabbed and shot. Following this discovery, the Guardia Civil launched a murder investigation. A 32-year-old Czech national was arrested on suspicion of involvement in the crime but was subsequently released on bail. Authorities also issued an international arrest warrant for the primary suspect, believed to have fled to Thailand or another location.
The news of John’s death devastated his family. His brother Darren expressed the family’s profound grief, stating that their parents were “two broken people” who would “never get over this.” He added, “John’s at rest … we’re not, we’ll never be at rest.” John’s sister Courtney shared her heartbreak on social media, writing, “My body is numb and my heart is broken. You have taken my brother’s life and ruined mine – you have put us through hell.”
Following the identification of John’s body, his family prioritized repatriating his remains to Northern Ireland. The Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust assisted in this process. John’s father, Billy George, expressed frustration with the investigation’s progress in Spain and the lack of communication from local authorities. He stated, “I’m broken and finished, I’m a broken man.”
A vigil was held in memory of John at St Luke’s Church in Belfast on January 19, 2025, where mourners gathered with candles and photos to show support for the family. His funeral was scheduled for January 24, 2025.
The investigation into John’s murder remains ongoing, with Spanish authorities continuing their efforts to apprehend the primary suspect. The family’s solicitor emphasized the importance of receiving regular updates from the authorities, stating, “The family are both distressed but also relieved at this latest news. It brings to an end an extremely tortuous search process for the body.”
John George’s untimely death has left a profound void in the lives of his family and friends. As they navigate this difficult time, they continue to seek justice for John and remember the joy and love he brought into their lives.
