The majority of members from District Boards X and XI of Orihuela, which represent the residents of Orihuela Costa, have requested an extraordinary session for the Mayor of Orihuela to explain the status of the 2024 budget and the plans for the 2025 budget.

Residents, associations, and opposition municipal groups have jointly called for the mayor’s appearance in a special session to clarify what happened with the approved investments for 2024. These funds left the coastal area without investments and with public services operating at bare minimum levels. They also seek detailed explanations regarding the plans for the 2025 budget.

The two coastal district boards are currently at a standstill following the resignation of their secretaries—both municipal employees—leading to the indefinite suspension of the first ordinary session of the year, initially scheduled for January 20.

Board members have expressed frustration over the systematic failure to implement decisions made in meetings and the lack of information from those responsible for providing it.

They also denounce the failure to draft the needs report for each district, as required by the Citizen Participation Regulation, which should have been completed before the 2025 budget project was prepared. This project has already received initial approval.

Residents hope that the Mayor of Orihuela will act in accordance with his statements and give Orihuela Costa the attention it requires. The area has unique needs and a registered population comparable to the city centre, which it far exceeds during the winter season due to its large seasonal population.
