The Department of Statistics has released Orihuela’s demographic data for 2024, showing declines in both births and deaths. The figures highlight a trend of population aging and persistently low birth rates.

Decrease in Deaths

A total of 463 deaths were recorded in 2024, representing a significant 29% drop compared to 657 deaths in 2023. Mortality rates are higher among men, who accounted for 57.4% of deaths, compared to 42.5% for women.

Declining Birth Rates

Births also continued to decline, with 481 newborns in 2024. This marks a 1.8% decrease compared to 2023 and a cumulative drop of 23% since 2021.

According to Mª Carmen Portugal, Councillor for Statistics, “The declining birth rate, coupled with the broader trend since 2021, reflects a significant long-term reduction in natality.”

Nationality of Newborns

The majority of newborns (77%) were of Spanish nationality, totaling 355 births. Among foreign nationalities:

Morocco ranked second with 47 births. Colombia and Ukraine followed with 12 births each. Algeria and the United Kingdom each registered 11 births.

Aging Population

The data also underscores Orihuela’s aging population: 22.7% of residents are aged 65 or older. Notably, there are 23 centenarians, with 78% of them being women.

Unique Age Distribution by Area

Certain areas display specific age-related trends:

Correntías Bajas has no residents aged 80 or older. Camino Viejo de Callosa has no inhabitants over 90. Barbarroja, by contrast, lacks any residents under 9 years old.

Adult Population Breakdown

Adults aged 25 to 59 make up 47% of the population, totalling 40,714 individuals. Their geographical distribution is as follows:

40% reside in Orihuela city. 30% live in rural districts (pedanías). 29% are in the coastal area.

This demographic report sheds light on Orihuela’s challenges, including an aging population and declining birth rates, prompting potential shifts in policy and resource allocation.
