The Civil Guard is searching for a group of boys and girls who assaulted a 21-year-old man in a parking lot near the Sports Palace in Torrevieja. The incident occurred at 00:30 on Saturday, after the Paella Day celebrations for the patron saints of Torrevieja. The young man was trying to protect his partner when he was kicked in the head.
The couple was returning home on foot when the attack happened. The young man suffered a fractured cheekbone and requires specialised maxillofacial surgery at the Hospital de Sant Joan de Alicante, after being transferred from the University Hospital of Torrevieja. He also has a large bruise on one eye, while the young woman sustained minor cuts and bruises.
Thousands of people had attended the Paella Day celebrations, with over 500 plots prepared by the Council of Fiestas. Despite the municipal compound closing at 7 p.m., many young people continued partying in the surrounding areas.
The attackers, wearing themed paella day sweatshirts, violently tackled the young woman, knocking her to the ground. When her partner tried to help, he was kicked in the head multiple times. The attack has been reported to the Civil Guard of Torrevieja, who are reviewing video surveillance footage to identify the aggressors. The couple was taken to Torrevieja hospital by relatives.
