The fishing sector in the Region of Murcia is facing a severe crisis due to new European restrictions that will limit trawling to only 27 days per year, down from the current 145 days. This drastic reduction threatens the viability of the entire industry, which relies heavily on trawling for its income. Fishermen fear that this measure will lead to widespread bankruptcies, job losses, and the closure of businesses.
In response, the sector has planned a two-day strike on December 9th and 10th, during which boats will be moored, markets closed, and representatives will travel to Brussels to protest the decision.
They also plan to organize a large-scale demonstration in Madrid. If the European Union does not reconsider its stance, the fishermen may resort to an indefinite strike.
The fishermen argue that the restrictions are unjustified, as they have increased their catches significantly in recent years. They also point out the hypocrisy of the EU, which imposes strict regulations on European fishermen while allowing the import of illegally caught fish from Morocco.
They fear that this unfair competition will further undermine their already struggling industry.
