An 80-year-old man in Alicante was defrauded of over €11,000 after his phone was stolen. Criminals swiftly made five unauthorized transactions, including large transfers and purchases, before the victim could cancel his cards.

Following a police investigation, two suspects—a 28-year-old Colombian woman and a 22-year-old Spanish man—were arrested in Northern Spain. Authorities are investigating whether they also stole the phone or if other criminals were involved.

The National Police have warned of a rise in this type of crime, where thieves steal phones to access bank accounts.

A similar case earlier this year involved a British tourist in Benidorm, who lost £16,000 after criminals obtained his phone and access credentials.

To prevent such fraud, police recommend not entering passwords when strangers are nearby, using additional security layers in banking apps, and securing mobile devices properly. They urge vigilance as phone-based financial scams become increasingly common.
