The CCOO union branch of the Torrevieja Health Department has raised concerns over the worsening conditions at the La Loma health centre in Torrevieja. In a statement, the union highlighted serious deficiencies and called for urgent action to address them.
According to CCOO, the facility has suffered from “significant infrastructure deterioration” for years. Issues include falling debris in the recovery room, outdated furniture, deteriorating rest areas, and inadequate air conditioning systems. These problems not only affect patient comfort but also create difficult working conditions for healthcare staff.
The union is demanding the long-promised investment that was supposed to follow the reversion of the Torrevieja Health Department to public management. When the regional administration resumed control in October 2021, it pledged substantial funding for improvements, reflected in subsequent regional budgets.
Specifically, €30 million was allocated through 2024 for healthcare infrastructure upgrades in the district. This investment was meant to fund the expansion of Torrevieja Hospital, the construction of new health centres, and improvements to existing facilities like La Loma. However, the latter project has yet to begin.
CCOO is urging authorities to prioritize these long-overdue renovations and start work “without further delay” to ensure safe and adequate facilities for both patients and staff.
The union also recently reported that debris had fallen from the ceiling in the emergency room, forcing the facility to close for several weeks.
