The Civil Guard is investigating two men, aged 20 and 23, as the suspected perpetrators of theft and receiving stolen goods, respectively, following the theft of 10 fire extinguishers from a building in Torrevieja and their subsequent sale to a scrap yard.
Inspection Uncovers the Theft
The investigation began when officers from the Nature Protection Service (SEPRONA) in Guardamar conducted an inspection at a scrap metal buy-sell business. During the inspection, they found 10 nearly new and fully charged fire extinguishers, an unusual item for such establishments.
When asked for documentation regarding the acquisition of the extinguishers, the scrapyard owner claimed he had no receipts, stating that a woman and her son had left them there without his consent.
After gathering evidence, the officers located the company responsible for the maintenance of the extinguishers, which confirmed they belonged to a local building. Shortly after, the property manager of the affected community filed a formal complaint regarding the theft.
Suspects Identified and Stolen Goods Recovered
With the complaint in hand, the officers seized the extinguishers and transported them to the Civil Guard station in Torrevieja. After confirming ownership, they were returned to the rightful owners.
The investigation led to the identification of the individuals involved. A 20-year-old man, who stole the extinguishers, is now being investigated for theft, while the scrapyard owner is under investigation for receiving stolen goods.
Importance of Reporting and Scrap Yard Controls
The Civil Guard stresses the importance of promptly reporting such incidents to aid investigation and recovery efforts. They also stated that scrap metal businesses must enforce strict controls, including verifying seller documentation and the origin of goods, to prevent handling stolen property.
