The Guardia Civil of the Murcia region has intercepted a truck driver on the RM-714 highway near Cehegín, who was found to be driving five times over the legal alcohol limit. The driver is now under investigation for a potential road safety offense.
The incident occurred on the RM-714 road, which connects Jumilla and Caravaca de la Cruz. Officers from the Caravaca de la Cruz Traffic Detachment were conducting a routine alcohol and drug checkpoint as part of the European ‘Roadpol-Truck-Bus’ campaign, aimed at increasing road safety enforcement on trucks and buses.
During the operation, officers stopped a 40-ton articulated truck traveling from Germany to Málaga. The driver was subjected to two breathalyzer tests, returning results of 0.79 mg/l and 0.70 mg/l, far exceeding the legal alcohol limit of 0.15 mg/l for professional drivers.
Following the results, traffic specialists from the Guardia Civil placed the driver under investigation for an offense against road safety, specifically for driving a motor vehicle while exceeding the permitted alcohol limit.
SEVERE PENALTIES FOR DRUNK DRIVING
According to Article 379 of the Spanish Penal Code, driving under the influence of alcohol with levels exceeding 0.60 mg/l is a criminal offense. Those convicted face penalties of:
Three to six months in prison,
Fines ranging from six to twelve months,
A driving ban of one to four years.
