To raise awareness of women’s contributions to science, technology, and innovation, as well as to inspire young girls to pursue STEM careers, the University of Alicante (UA) in Torrevieja, in collaboration with the Torrevieja City Council’s Department of Education, hosted two engaging workshops: “Learn How Our Brain Works” and “Discover How to Extract DNA from a Banana”.

The workshops were led by neuroscientist María Luisa Molina Gallego at the Virgen del Carmen Cultural Centre, with sessions held at 10:00, 11:00, 12:00, 17:30, and 18:30. Each session accommodated groups of 30 participants.

Attendees, primarily students from Colegio Público Cuba, as well as participants from UNED-Torrevieja and local families, explored the fundamentals of brain function and experimented with DNA extraction from a banana.

María Luisa Molina Gallego, a doctor in Biology, neuroscientist, and science communicator, holds a degree in Biology from the University of Alicante. She began her research career in the laboratory of Dr. Pere Berbel-Navarro at the Institute of Neurosciences of Alicante, where she studied the development of the cerebral cortex in hypothyroid rat embryos.
