The Department of Culture is celebrating the centenary of Miguel Hernández’s early education at the Diocesan College of Santo Domingo, a pivotal place in his life that marked the beginning of his relationship with literature.

To honor this milestone, the department has organized a commemorative concert, which will take place on February 20 at this historically significant location. “It is a key place in the poet’s life, where he studied and began his literary journey,” stated the Councilor for Culture, Anabel García.

The event will bring together renowned artists, including director and composer Albert Alcaraz, soprano Carmen Solís, and pianist Anne Pagès-Boisset, who will perform a selection of pieces inspired by Miguel Hernández’s writings.

The concert will be held in Orihuela at this emblematic venue, with free entry available until full capacity is reached. Doors will open at 7:00 PM, and the performance will begin at 8:00 PM.

Soprano Carmen Solís will present a musical selection that was previously performed at the National Opera of Montpellier. “We are privileged to be able to enjoy this high-level cultural experience in our municipality,” said Anabel García.

The concert will take place in the Cloister of the University within the educational centre.

In addition to the concert, attendees can participate in a guided tour titled “Between Verses and Memories,” scheduled for the same day at 6:00 PM at the Diocesan College of Santo Domingo.

This tour will provide insight into the poet’s student years. “It will allow visitors to learn about Miguel Hernández’s academic life and his connection to the College of Santo Domingo,” explained Anabel García. The tour will help attendees relive key moments in the poet’s formative years.

To join the guided tour, participants must confirm attendance by emailing reservas@orihuelacultural.es or calling 672.219.071.

These events highlight the poet’s time at the College of Santo Domingo, aiming to “enhance the literary legacy of Miguel Hernández by emphasizing the significance of his time at this historic educational institution in Orihuela,” stated the Councilor for Culture.

As part of the centenary celebrations, the Department of Culture of Orihuela inaugurated a temporary exhibition on October 24, 2024, titled “Centenary of Miguel Hernández at the College of Santo Domingo.”

The exhibition, open until March 9, 2025, at the Miguel Hernández House Museum, explores the poet’s student years, shedding light on one of the lesser-known aspects of his life.

The exhibition consists of several sections that allow visitors to delve into the poet’s early years in school. Notable pieces include the first issues of the magazine El Gallo Crisis, directed by Ramón Sijé, featuring a cover designed by Francisco de Díe, as well as manuscripts by Sijé, poems by Miguel Hernández, and a letter from composer Manuel de Falla.

This exhibition provides valuable insight into the poet’s early life and the influence of this period on his later work.

The exhibition is open to the public Tuesday to Saturday from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM, and Sundays from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, with free admission.
