The Valencian Community Transfusion Centre (CTCV) ended 2024 with a total of 176,411 units of blood. The distribution by province was 96,924 units in Valencia, 17,909 in Castellón and 61,578 in Alicante. These donations were possible thanks to the generosity of 116,314 people, who in many cases came to donate more than once.

The director of the Transfusion Centre, Cristina Arbona, highlights the efforts of blood donors, “thanks to them and the work of the centre, we have once again been able to help all the patients in Valencian hospitals who were waiting for blood”.

In 2024, the CTCV carried out a total of 4,746 outings with mobile teams. Of these, 2,491 were carried out in Valencia, 1,796 in Alicante and 459 in Castellón.

The number of new donors was 17,435. By province, there were 6,536 new donors in Alicante, 1,535 in Castellón and 9,364 in Valencia. This figure represents an increase of 11% compared to the previous year.

In 2024, 55.2% of donors were men and 44.8% were women, taking into account that women can only donate three times a year and men four times. By age group, 32% of donors were between 18 and 40 years old, the 41 to 50 age group accounted for 28.99% of donors, those between 51 and 60 years old represented 30.30% and those over 61 years old represented 8.71%.

A TOTAL OF 417 BABIES FED BY THE MILK BANK

During 2024, the Valencian Community milk bank distributed a total of 853 litres of pasteurised milk to the neonatal wards of the Hospital Universitari i Politècnic La Fe, Hospital Clínico, Hospital General de Alicante, Hospital de Elche, Hospital General de Castellón and Hospital de San Juan de Alicante.

In addition, 288 mothers registered as first-time donors (161 in Valencia, 94 in Alicante and 33 in Castellón). In total, the generosity of 322 donors (both new and old) enabled the distribution of breast milk to 417 babies.

TISSUE BANK

The year 2024 also leaves a positive balance for the tissue bank of the Valencian Community, with the number of deceased donors donating tissue having grown by 16%, reaching the figure of 520. This record is mainly due to the increase in cornea donations, led by the General Hospital of Valencia and the San Juan Hospital of Alicante.

In addition to corneas, several tissues have reported historic highs: bone-tendon tissue, amniotic membrane and skin, both in donations and implants, allowing more than 1,500 recipients to benefit from them.

There has also been a record number of corneal transplants, with 632 distributed, 18% more than the previous year, with the leading centres in implantation being the Medical Ophthalmology Foundation of the Valencian Community (FOM) and the General Hospital of Elche.

BONE MARROW DONOR REGISTRY

During 2024, a total of 2,350 new donors were registered in the bone marrow registry (REDMO) in the Valencian Community. Of these, 936 correspond to Alicante, 1,129 to Valencia and 285 to Castellón. By gender, 776 were men and 1,574 women.

In apheresis donation, the donor is connected to a special machine that extracts either plasma and/or platelets. Since the rest of the blood is returned to the donor in the same circuit, although the donation takes a little longer, it can be repeated more frequently.

Platelets are essential for many treatments, especially in oncology. In addition, only with human plasma can certain drugs (albumin, immunoglobulins, coagulation factors, etc.) be produced, which are used to treat diseases that can be very serious.

The increasing consumption of these components, especially immunoglobulins, makes it necessary to establish specific plasma donation policies in order to achieve and maintain self-sufficiency (independence from other countries and adequate supply of product).

In 2024, 8,561 plasma and platelet donations were obtained thanks to the 4,114 donors who repeatedly came forward to make this special type of donation. In this way, the upward trend of these donations continues, although there is still a way to go to achieve self-sufficiency. This year, the CTCV has implemented apheresis donation in mobile units, bringing this type of donation closer to the population, which will be expanded in the coming years.
