The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility has extended the toll-free use of the AP-7 Alicante ring road for another year, with plans to make the measure permanent.
Initially introduced as a pilot in July 2024 and later extended until February 2025, the initiative has proven effective in reducing congestion on the A-70. The toll exemption will now remain in place until at least February 15, 2026, as authorities work on the legal framework for its permanent removal.
This decision follows data showing significant traffic improvements. Between September and November 2024, congestion on the A-70 decreased by 19–34% during moderate congestion hours and by 18–43% during peak congestion periods. Over the summer, the impact was even greater, with reductions ranging from 64–74% for light congestion and 69–74% for severe congestion.
Traffic demand on the AP-7 has doubled while maintaining a smooth flow, leading to reduced travel times and fuel consumption. Reports indicate that CO₂ emissions dropped by 14% in the southbound direction and 24% in the northbound direction due to fewer stop-and-go traffic patterns. A cost-benefit analysis estimates the social benefit of toll removal at €16.8 million per year.
Authorities also highlight road safety improvements, noting a more consistent speed pattern on the A-70, which reduces accident risks. The AP-7’s continued free access provides a viable alternative for long-distance travellers while easing pressure on the A-70.
As discussions continue on expanding the A-70 with a third lane, the toll exemption serves as an immediate, cost-effective solution without requiring additional infrastructure investments.
