Authorities are investigating whether the partner of Lorena, the 37-year-old diver who died earlier this month in Cartagena’s Cueva del Agua, may be culpable of negligent homicide for failing to prevent her tragic death.

The Civil Guard has questioned the 41-year-old man, who had been in a relationship with Lorena for about three months. He was the one who called emergency services on the night of January 18th, reporting that Lorena had not resurfaced after their dive. Specialists from the Civil Guard’s Underwater Activities Group (GEAS) recovered her body at around 1:45 a.m. the following morning.

According to the suspect, who is an experienced diver, the couple entered the cave equipped with two compressed air tanks each, intending to conduct a brief and low-risk dive. However, visibility deteriorated rapidly in the cave, a notorious diving site where sediment can easily cloud the water due to finning and tank bubbles.

The suspect claims Lorena became disoriented after losing hold of the cave’s guide rope. He said he tried to calm her and help her regain the rope, but she grew increasingly panicked and resisted his assistance. Fearing for his own safety, he exited the cave to seek help and called emergency services.

As part of the investigation, the Civil Guard has seized the suspect’s phone to examine messages exchanged in the days leading up to the dive. On Tuesday, the suspect, accompanied by his lawyer, Manuel Martínez, provided the PIN to unlock the device.

For now, the suspect remains free while the investigation continues. Authorities aim to determine whether his actions, or lack thereof, played a role in the fatal outcome of the dive.
