Once again, Harry's outstanding ability to read the water produced the winning weight of the day

Saturday 11th January saw 11 of us have a nice late start to the match, purely as a test to see if the later start produced better weights and although the weights did improve over last week, we do believe it was more than likely due to the better weather.

One very big question was kept being asked. “When is Harry Billing going back to the UK?” Albeit it was asked in a far more expressive way, and I am sure we all know just what “expressive words” were used!

Once again, his outstanding ability to read the water produced the winning weight of the day from “B” Section’s peg 9 on the ‘wides’. His 27kg 900grammes was more than double the weight of Alan Frith on peg 11 and his weight of 11kg 800grammes, was to his credit, double the weight of John Waples’s 5kg 300grammes from peg 13.

“A” section (pegs A1 to 7) were going to be left out in favour of the high 30’s pegs, but the results from the match on Wednesday were favourable, and we decided to have 4 pegs on that section too.

Peg 2, once again, came out on top and it was Bill “Slaphead” Cannon who was lucky enough to draw it and (somehow) coaxed 11kg of carp from that peg and into his net.

It was a delight to see our only lady member, Marlene Hutchinson taking the runners-up slot from end peg 6 with 2 carp and a barbel for 6kg 600grammes.

Section “C” is the one every club seems to be avoiding, and the reason is because it isn’t producing. Now, one must as the question of HOW do they know it isn’t producing if no-one fishes it?

Peg 21 saw yours Truly (Steve Higgins) weigh 3 carp and 7 Carrasio (akin to a Crucian Carp) for a winning weight of 5kg 250grammes and very close behind was the ‘Wee Jock’ Ronnie Arthur with the same number of carp, but not quite as many Carrasio for 4kg 750 grammes from the very favoured peg 23.

After the match, we popped into our joint sponsors pub The Dog & Firkin (Catral) for a very nice pint and a chat about the days fishing and other Bull-wotsit!

Our next match, our 2nd league match, is on Sunday the 26th of this month and ways to disable Harry’s motor are being investigated.
