Nothing very startling in the story, with changes of council happening on a fairly regular basis. However, Rosa Sánchez Bishop is just 26 years old.
Her election came about when the 11 opposition councillors pushed through a motion of censure against the current mayor of Alhama, María Cánovas (PP), who governed in a minority until now with the support of the eight PP councillors and the two from Vox.
There were no surprises. The eight PSOE councillors, the two from Izquierda Unida-Verdes and the support of the independent councillor Antonio Sibina supported the new mayor against the 10 from PP and Vox to achieve the change of Office after registering a motion of censure on December 20.
Sánchez Bishop received the baton of command from the Town Hall Secretary and took the oath of office. A professional athlete, she was the Spanish Orienteering Champion. At 26 years of age (born in 1998), she becomes the youngest mayor of the Region of Murcia.
The PSOE recovers the Mayor’s Office in Alhama that it held from 2015 to 2023.
