The Spanish Olympic Committee (COE) has awarded the Olympic Plaque of the COE to the Torrevieja City Council in recognition of its significant contributions and outstanding efforts in promoting the sport of handball.

Torrevieja’s mayor, Eduardo Dolón, expressed his gratitude to the COE and its president, Alejandro Blanco, for this prestigious honour. He described it as an encouragement to continue prioritising sports as a fundamental pillar for the growth and development of the city.

The Mayor highlighted the trust placed in Torrevieja by the Royal Spanish Handball Federation (RFEBM), led by its president Francisco Blázquez, to host major international events. These have proven to be tremendous successes, drawing public acclaim and showcasing exceptional organization. Two key milestones were especially memorable for the city: hosting the Warriors during the 2021 Women’s Handball World Championship and the Women’s Handball Pre-Olympic Tournament in April 2024, both held at the Palacio de Deportes “Tavi y Carmona”.

In addition, Dolón praised the efforts of Diana Box Alonso, Councillor for Sports, and her team for their dedication and hard work, which have transformed Torrevieja and its Sports City into a national benchmark for excellence in sports infrastructure and events.

The Olympic Plaque of the Spanish Olympic Committee (COE) is a prestigious honour awarded by the Spanish Olympic Committee (Comité Olímpico Español). It is given to individuals, organisations, or institutions that have made significant contributions to the development and promotion of sports in Spain, particularly those that uphold the values of the Olympic movement.
