Alicante’s Low Emission Zone (ZBE) is on track to be implemented in January 2025, as part of a city-wide initiative to reduce traffic-related pollution and improve air quality. The Popular Party-led government has finalized the installation of necessary infrastructure, including traffic monitoring cameras, air quality sensors, and a real-time control system integrated with the “Alicante se mueve” project.

Key features include:

Traffic Monitoring and Restrictions:

The ZBE will be divided into two main zones: the area enclosed by Gran Vía and the Traditional Centre, from Alfonso el Sabio to the seafront.

Restrictions for high-emission vehicles will be activated during pollution episodes, with access permits required for certain cases.

Smartphone Application:

Provides real-time traffic updates, alternative routes, parking availability, and reservation options for loading/unloading areas.

Allows users to apply for temporary or occasional access permits.

Benefits for Business and Environment:

Expected to boost local commerce and hospitality sectors, similar to Madrid’s ZBE experience.

Predicted to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 164,000 tons annually through traffic calming measures.

Pending steps include the final approval of the regulatory ordinance and resolution of public objections, with no significant delays anticipated. Signage and road markings are also being updated. Alicante’s ZBE is poised to become a key tool in promoting sustainable urban mobility and combating climate change.
