The Torrevieja radar network continues to expand with the council approving the award of the contract for the installation of two new speed control devices. The cost of the units amounts to 59,757 euros, according to the councillor responsible for Police, Federico Alarcón.
The first will be positioned on Avenida Baleares and the other will be on Avenida Alfred Nobel. The first of these routes is a wide street between single-family homes and with one lane in each direction, as well as parking strips on both sides. It connects Plaza de Sevilla with the Casagrande industrial estate, being one of the main routes for travelling from the coves to Avenida de las Cortes Valencianas.
Alfred Nobel, meanwhile, is the road along the seafront that connects Los Locos with La Mata through the coves. The point where it will be located will be next to the Masa Internacional hotel just before the Torre del Moro. At this point there are already educational radars with emoticons, which although they indicate the speed at which you are driving, and do not issue sanctions.
In both places there is a certain amount of pedestrian traffic in summer, with the consequent risk of being involved in an accident.
Radar in San Luis
Last summer, there was the controversial installation of a new radar on the CV-905, near the San Luis residential area. The road, which is the responsibility of the Generalitat, was limited to just 50 kilometres per hour, to the indignation of most users, despite having two lanes in each direction and a landscaped central barrier separating the two sides. The indignation of residents has been such that, in its few months of life, this radar has been vandalised on several occasions with paint.
These new radars are added to those already on the N-332, which has two radars (with a speed limit of 80 kilometres per hour), one next to the exit towards the salt flats and the Acequión neighbourhood and another past the exit towards the hospital, Los Balcones and Mar Azul.
Preventing accidents
The council has already installed devices on three of the main roads into and out of the town centre with a speed limit of 40 kilometres per hour. One is on Avenida de las Cortes Valencianas, the main access road from the north from La Mata and Guardamar, at the intersection with Ronda Ricardo Lafuente.
The other two radars are located on the two main exit roads in the south of the municipality. There is one in Gregorio Marañón, next to Los Náufragos beach, and the other in Desiderio Rodríguez, next to the construction area of Villa Amalia, before Mar Azul.
Condemned
Meanwhile the Council has defended the effectiveness of these radar cameras in preventing accidents. It claims that complaints from residents about vehicles travelling at high speed have decreased in the areas where they have been installed. In addition, they point out that, thanks to their presence, three reckless drivers have already been arrested and criminal proceedings have been opened against them for driving three times over the permitted limit.
