Top of Marion Stirling´s Bucket list was to walk the 96 miles of the West Highland Way. This is a gruelling walk from Milngavie to Fort William in Scotland. It’s a trek that courses through paths, Glens, over mountains, through rivers and along roads.
Marion has always wanted to do this walk but has never had the opportunity with her being a Military wife and being away for so many years, so at 66 years old, she thought this would be her last opportunity. So with her husband Sandy as support she booked a 6 day adventure and paid for her Sister and Granddaughter to go with her.
She mentioned it to her colleagues who work with her as Volunteers at Age Concern, and Shirley suggested that she should do it for the Age Concern Costa Blanca Sur charity, which she thought was a good idea.
So Sandy produced some sponsor forms and the pair set out to get as much as possible for the charity. With the generosity of her Family and Friends, in the UK and Spain, She managed to raise 842 Euros for Age Concern Costa Blanca Sur.
Marion would also love to say a Very Big THANK YOU to everyone who sponsored her and gave her support and encouragement on the journey. It was very much appreciated by all concerned and by the Charity.
The walk itself was much harder than she ever imagined, and there were many tears and thoughts of quitting as she climbed the likes of Conic Hill and the Devils Staircase, but with the support of Nicole and Liz (Granddaughter & Sister) she kept going till the bitter end.
In fact, she actually walked many more miles than was required, as she got lost on day one and did 2 extra miles on that day alone.
She had her WHW Passport, and she wanted to get all of the place names on it stamped, and so zig zagged a bit on route to get them all. All of which added a lot of extra miles, in fact, the lady in the last shop with the final stamp said that she had never seen a fully completed stamped one.
Marion swore that it would be the last time she ever did anything like that ever again, but time is a funny thing, and she is probably secretly planning another adventure in the future.
Must be an AGE thing. Oh how we forget so quickly when we get old.
Once again we would like to thank Marion for her very kind donation and everyone who gives donations to Age Concern Costa Blanca Sur
