The National Police have arrested an 18-year-old Ukrainian at Alicante-Elche airport, wanted by the Austrian justice system for drug trafficking. He faces a 15-year prison sentence under a European arrest warrant.
The young man imported 20 kilos of marijuana from Bangkok to Austria, hiding it in heat-sealed plastic bags inside his suitcase. This amount is 25 times higher than the legal limit. He transported the substance from Bangkok to Mannsworth, Austria, by plane.
However, he was caught attempting to smuggle the marijuana into Germany via Frankfurt airport. The attempt failed when his suitcase was seized during an X-ray check of transit luggage at the terminal.
The suspect subsequently fled Austria, prompting the issuance of a European arrest warrant. Agents from the UDYCO Central International Fugitives Group and the 1st Organized Crime Group of Alicante arrested him at the Alicante terminal.
The detainee has been placed at the disposal of the National Court responsible for processing the extradition order.
