The Vega Baja region is set to receive two new vocational training (FP) centres. This follows the Ministry of Education’s decision to prioritise FP in the area.
Orihuela’s IES El Palmeral to Transform
One of these centres will be in Orihuela, where IES El Palmeral will undergo a significant transformation. The institute will no longer offer ESO and Bachillerato programs to focus solely on FP courses. This decision has sparked debate among teachers and students, who will need to be relocated.
Torrevieja Secures Land for new FP Centre
Torrevieja is the other location for a new FP centre. The council has offered a large plot of land in the La Hoya development for the construction of this facility. This move aims to address the growing demand for vocational training in the region, particularly in sectors like boat repair, elderly care, and tourism.
Addressing Educational Needs in the Region
While these new centres are a positive development, the decision ignores the needs of Orihuela Costa where concerns remain about the educational needs of it’s children. The local community has called for increased FP options to combat high school dropout rates. However, it appears that students in this locality may still need to travel some distances for their vocational training.
