The residents of Orihuela Coast are requesting more funding for renewal of street signs. They criticize the City Council for allocating only 13,000 euros to the coast in the new contract.
The Council’s Contracting portal recently announced a tender for road sign contracts. This contract is divided into two parts: execution of road signs and paint supply in Orihuela centre and districts, costing nearly 200,000 euros over two years; and supply of materials like vertical signs and beacons in Orihuela centre, districts, and Orihuela Costa, costing around 40,000 euros for one year.
Unidos por la Costa points out that of the 240,000 euros allocated, only 13,000 euros are designated for Orihuela Costa, which is insufficient to address the serious signage deficiencies. They have repeatedly called for renewing both horizontal (e.g., zebra crossings) and vertical (e.g., stop signs) road signs, emphasizing that current conditions compromise road safety for vehicles and pedestrians.
The association urges the City Council to tender a specific contract for Orihuela Costa, based on a detailed inventory of signage needs. This inventory should be prepared jointly by the road maintenance contractor and the Orihuela Local Police, prioritising actions according to risk and traffic frequency.
Unidos por la Costa also offers to collaborate in preparing this inventory and continues to demand adequate budgetary reinforcement for Orihuela Costa to function effectively.
