The bells that once sat in the western tower of the Church of the Immaculate Conception will ring again as they have done for almost a century. The parish priest, José Antonio Gea, received the bells at the doors of the church after a meticulous restoration work by Murcian bell ringers. It is intended that they will be operational again in time for the patron saint festivities.
The three bells, known as the “hour bells”, had to be removed in 1998 due to their deterioration. Afterwards, due to lack of funds, they were left outdoors in a courtyard for 26 years.
Originating from the beginning of the 20th century, he bells are cast in iron. The wooden supports had to be replaced because the originals were unrecoverable. The tower also underwent works that were completed in 2018.
On Wednesday the bells were blessed by the parish priest who is also dean of the Cathedral of Orihuela. Immediately afterwards, a crane lifted them up to the tower, where they have been placed in their original position, ready to call the people of Torrevieja to the Eucharist once again.
