Torrevieja Council is taking proactive steps to manage the local cat population. Through its Animal Protection Department, the council has been actively sterilizing stray cats, with nearly 400 procedures completed between January and October 2024.
A key component of this initiative is the Municipal Plan for Locating Cat Colonies, which aims to identify and map these colonies, as well as the individuals who care for them. By collaborating with local associations, the council has implemented a successful “Capture, Sterilize, Return” (CSR) program to control population growth
To further streamline the management of cat colonies, the council plans to issue identification cards and vests to both the colonies and their caretakers. This will help to formalize their roles and facilitate better communication with local authorities.
In addition to these practical measures, the council is committed to raising awareness about animal welfare. Recent training sessions for cat colony caregivers have focused on the new Animal Welfare Law and best practices for caring for animals. Future initiatives will continue to promote responsible pet ownership and harmonious coexistence between humans and animals.
