A lamppost with six lights has been blown over on the Juan Aparicio (Las Rocas) promenade in Torrevieja by strong winds. The metal column, 12 metres high, was located on the promenade, next to the pedestrian and terrace area.
Fortunately, it fell on the low cliff in front of the sea, causing some damage to a bench located next to the edge of the promenade, between the monument to the Man of the Sea and the sculpture of the Beautiful Lola.
The emergency services of the city lighting team have cordoned off the area with fences and protected the base from which the wiring installation still protrudes.
The pole fell with the first strong gusts of the easterly wind that occurred on Monday night, as the wind reached up to 60 kilometres per hour along some points of the Vega Baja coast.
The strong easterly wind also blew over a palm tree in Torrevieja on the Punta Margalla promenade, opposite the Ruta al Sur terrace.
On inspecting the lighting column, it seems that there is a certain amount of deterioration at the base caused by rust. The corrosion was clearly visible in an image taken last summer by local photographer Joaquín Carrión.
