The Orihuela Council has announced a new investment of 5.39 million euros to renew its garbage collection and street cleaning equipment. This comes just a year after approving another investment of 2.55 million euros for the same purpose, which has yet to be implemented.

The current machinery is outdated and in need of replacement. The equipment is struggling to meet the demands of the growing population, especially during the summer months. Frequent breakdowns and high repair costs have made it clear that a significant upgrade is necessary.

The new investment includes the purchase of various new vehicles and equipment. This includes four side-loading garbage trucks, three rear-loading trucks, five dump trucks, containers, a tanker truck, sweepers, and waste bins.

The Council emphasizes that this investment is complementary to the previous one. While the initial investment was intended to improve the service for the previous summer, it has not yet been fully implemented. The new investment aims to address the ongoing challenges and comply with environmental regulations.

Despite these investments, the city still faces other waste management issues. The local waste plan has not been fully approved, and the implementation of the brown container for organic waste has been delayed. Additionally, the government team is working to restart the Surpal waste management facility.

Overall, Orihuela is taking steps to improve its garbage collection and street cleaning services. However, challenges remain, and further efforts are needed to ensure efficient and sustainable waste management.
