As many parents left the “back to school” rush to the last minute, they were still somewhat more punctual than the school itself in one location, but the third school on the Orihuela Costa, which should have opened for the 2023 school year, has taken a step closer to reality.
Orihuela’s Number 20 school, which should have opened a year ago and which will be entirely in portacabins just like a generation of children already, will not be completed until the end of this year.
Orihuela Council’s contracting committee has however finally approved the pre-award of the contract for the adaptation of the plot on which the school will be installed, on calle Níspero. It is a two-line centre, which requires a series of actions to be able to house the facilities, from levelling the land to the installation of pipes, an electrical network and other infrastructure to house the schoolchildren. The Domingo Serna company will be in charge of carrying out these works, for 200,000 euro.
The aim is now to reduce the two and a half month deadlines contemplated in the tender so that the works can be completed by the end of this year. The aim is to be able to gradually install the portacabins, rented for more than a year by the Ministry of Education, in parallel with the adaptation of the plot, in order to reduce the deadlines as much as possible, since to these two and a half months of adaptation of the land would have to be added the installation of the prefabricated classrooms, which would increase the time by another two months.
Meanwhile, the two centres on the coast are overwhelmed, with the highest ratios in the Community and with many more students than they are able to take on. This is what the opposition recalled coinciding with the return to school. The problem with this educational school had been dragging on since the previous legislature, with several changes of plot that were delaying the times and increasing a problem that the new government team also did not know how to solve. The main obstacle was the tendering and awarding of this contract, which came up against the lack of budget, as it was a relatively high amount.
