Alicante City Council is seeking to gain full control over the regulation, inspection, and sanctioning of tourist apartments. They have initiated the process to request the transfer of these powers from the Consell, following the approval of Decree Law 9/2024.
By obtaining these powers, Alicante Council would be able to regulate the number of tourist apartments in specific areas, inspect for compliance, and initiate sanctioning proceedings against illegal operations. This would help to address overcrowding issues and combat the underground economy caused by unregistered tourist apartments.
The city council is currently finalising a report on the number of existing tourist apartment licenses and their locations. They are also working with the University of Alicante to conduct a comprehensive analysis of the sector and potential measures to be adopted. While they have not ruled out the possibility of suspending licenses, the city council is primarily focused on effective regulation and enforcement.
