Taxi drivers in Alicante are less then happy with the introduction of Uber and Cabify, specifically operating at Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernandez Airport, saying that there were alternatives which could have improved the service they provide without having to rely on ride booking companies.
Prior to the decision, the mayor of Elche, Pablo Ruz, had already rejected proposals to allow taxis from outside the municipality to pick up at the airport without bookings, such as Taxis from the capital, Alicante, a decision some of their taxi drivers consider to be political.
Francisco Sanchez, representative of taxi drivers in Alicante, believes that despite having a good relationship with colleagues in Elche, the arrival of the private operators is due to a “lack of public service”, and “political positioning”. Alicante drivers believe they have the operational capacity to act and could have solved the problems of queues at the airport.
Meanwhile, in other taxi queue related news, although Torrevieja town hall had been criticised due to the lack of taxis in the town in summer, causing extensive queues and inconvenience, we must also give credit because they did take steps towards the end of summer to ease the problems of standing around due to extensive delays by providing more benches to sit on whilst you wait.
Specifically, the taxi rank on Passeig de la Libertad now has a total of four benches, and so the problems of having to stand around for hours waiting for a taxi have been solved, because now you can sit down and wait.
