Comisiones Obreras has denounced the reduction in police patrols in San Javier in violation of the operational plan established for the summer. All opposition groups have sent letters to the Government team requesting information on this matter.
The Police union explains in a statement that in San Javier, as in many municipalities, the arrival of summer means an increase in the number of residents and visitors. To adapt to this situation, a local police operational plan was drawn up for the summer with the intention of extending until mid-September.
However, the Commissions claim to have detected non-compliance with this plan in recent weeks. It claims that the patrol assigned to the outlying areas has disappeared and that the number of patrols that operate in La Manga has been reduced (preventing coverage of both sides of the bridge). The union also notes a lack of personnel at the headquarters to attend to the public during the night shift.
The union warns that “the increase in population during this summer period also increases criminal activity in the area.” There are reports of robberies in Avenida Romería de San Blas, Plaza Elíptica and Calle Jabalina as well as assaults in the nightclub area. There is also vandalism such as frequent drinking parties in Parque Cronista Miguel Gallego and damage and vandalism in many different areas such as Parque San Cayetano or Parque Bahía 2000.
“The reduction in the number of operational police patrols by the decision of the temporary head of the Local Police, especially at this time of year, may lead to an increase in the risk for the officers deployed due to the lack of support operations,” the Commissions point out. “It makes it difficult to provide an adequate service to the public and may affect the preventive capacity of police activity, increasing the risk for citizens and a possible increase in criminal acts.”
