The third edition of the Camp d’Elx photography contest has arrived, promoted by the Associació BaiaJovens in collaboration with the Department of Rural Development and different agricultural associations and businesses in the area.

This year focuses on the traditional agricultural irrigation system, which has conditioned the cultivation of palm trees and other plantations, as well as the economic, social, and agricultural growth of the municipality.

The councillor for the department, Felip Sànchez, who announced the competition along with the president of BaiaJovens, Vicent Soler, stressed that this initiative aims to value the hydraulic heritage and claim its protection and therefore its conservation. “This contest allows us to understand who we are and where we come from. In the end, Elche was an agricultural town throughout its history and this hydraulic heritage has allowed us to have this economic activity, in addition to having El Palmeral and a very powerful agricultural sector and one of the most important in the south of the Valencian Community”.

For his part, Soler has pointed out that the objective of this event is to make this part of the municipality known and to demand that facilities such as mills be preserved. Likewise, he has informed that each participant may submit up to a maximum of 10 photographs, which must be sent to the email concurscampdelx@gmail.com , indicating the place of their location (neighbourhood or district) and if desired, a name to describe the photograph. The deadline for sending the material will close on July 1, 2023. After that date, a jury will choose the winning photos.

The prizes will be 150 euro for the winner, 100 for the second and 50 for the third. In addition, 10 prizes will be awarded with a diploma and a basket of typical Camp d’Elx products.

In the last edition the theme revolved around the ‘faenetes’ which are typical rural houses of the Camp d’Elx and which were built from the eighteenth century on in hamlets and urban palm orchards. Around 80 people participated submitting 200 photographs.
