Pilar de la Horadada council has justified the purchase of a fire tender stating that, in the event of a fire in the town or surrounding areas, it takes at least 30 minutes for emergency cover to arrive from the Torrevieja Station
According to the Councillor for Security, José Tomás Saura, the cost of the new fire truck will be 120,000 euros. It will be operated by Civil Protection volunteers who will thereafter be the first point of call until such time as further assistance can arrive from Torrevieja.
The councillor explained that Pilar already had a smaller truck with similar characteristics “but now a larger one is required which will deal with any fire until the firefighters arrive.”
He said that during the summer months the municipality does have a fire tender on site from early morning until 9pm at night “but for the rest of the year we need to have our own emergency cover until the firefighters arrive”, as the municipality, he added, “has a very extensive municipal area and a large area of surrounding forest”.
