The Vega Baja Astronomy Group invite you to an observation evening on 14th September 2017. We are meeting on the Punta Prima promenade, up from the Nautilus Restaurant, just after dark… from 9:30pm onwards.

Main focus of the evening will be to let you see Saturn, the famous ringed planet through our telescopes.

Saturn is the sixth planet from the Sun and the most distant that can be seen with the naked eye. Saturn is best known for its fabulous ring system that was first observed in 1610 by the astronomer Galileo Galilei. Saturn is huge. It is the second largest planet in our Solar System. Jupiter is the only planet that is bigger. You cannot stand on Saturn. It is not like Earth. Saturn is made mostly of gases. It has a lot of helium.

Its beautiful rings are not solid. They are made up of bits of ice, dust and rock.

Some of these bits are as small as grains of sand. Some are much larger than tall buildings. Unlike Earth that only has 1 moon, Saturn has 62 . They range in size from smaller than a football stadium to larger than the planet Mercury,

Saturn’s ringed system makes the planet one of the most beautiful objects in the Solar System.

We look forward to seeing you. Fingers crossed for a clear sky! Keep looking up!

Vega Baja Astronomy Group meet at Casa Tom on Avenida Jaca, San Luis Torrevieja, second Wednesday of each month at 2.30.  email us at vegabaja.astronomygroup@gmail.com.
