The Orihuela council has ordered sealing up of the property abandoned for more than a decade on Calle Nutria on the Orihuela Costa

The Orihuela Council is taking action to address a long-standing problem in the community: the sealing off of the abandoned “Chinese House” on Calle Nutria. This dilapidated property, notorious for its association with drug use, violence, and criminal activity, has been a source of concern for local residents for years.

Following the tragic murder of 15-year-old Cloe, the council has issued an order to seal the property. Despite repeated warnings to the owner, the first back in 2013, no action has been taken by successive governments to secure the building. As a result, the council will now undertake the necessary work and bill the owner for the estimated cost of €25,600.

The “Chinese House” has become a focal point for anti-social behaviour. Local residents have reported numerous incidents, including fights, threats, and drug dealing. The property’s proximity to the local high school has also raised concerns about the negative influence on young people.

The tragic death of Cloe has underscored the urgent need to address the issue of abandoned properties and the associated problems of crime and anti-social behaviour. The council’s action is a significant step towards making the area safer for residents and young people. By taking this decisive action, the council is demonstrating its commitment to improving the quality of life for its citizens and protecting them from harm.

However, the challenge of dealing with abandoned properties is complex. In many cases, identifying and locating owners can be difficult, especially when properties have been neglected for many years. Additionally, legal processes can be time-consuming and costly.

Ultimately, the goal is to create safer, more vibrant communities by addressing the root causes of crime and anti-social behaviour and by involving local residents in the decision-making process, the council can ensure that any redevelopment plans align with the needs and aspirations of the community.
