The Civil Guard has confiscated 35 kilograms of lobster and rock octopus that were caught illegally. They were seized from a restaurant that was selling them without being able to prove their traceability or the health and safety guarantees for their consumption.

The owner of the establishment now faces various offences punishable by fines of up to 60,000 euros.

At the moment, the Nature Protection Service (Seprona) of the Civil Guard of Alicante is investigating this matter in an attempt to find the fishing vessel responsible for these illegal catches.

Following a tip off, Seprona officers went to the restaurant on August 21, where they found various unlabelled products in the freezer cabinets. There was no documentation to prove who it was purchased from, the type of product, its origin and its expiration date.

According to Seprona, “the illegal capture of these items poses a serious risk to the environment as it has been carried out without respecting the closed season, the established limit for capturing specimens, and other aspects that must be taken into account in order not to harm the species.”
