Our eighth defeat of the season came in another disappointing match, and in truth, the result could have been even worse.
Villena, a side that has improved significantly in recent weeks, started slowly. We had chances early on and could have been two goals up within the first 10 minutes. However, as the game progressed, our opponents grew into the match, and with their first real attack, they took the lead.
Things went from bad to worse when Villena doubled their advantage in the 28th minute with a bizarre goal that somehow found its way into our net. Both of their goals were preventable and should have been defended much better.
We managed to pull one back from the penalty spot in the 32nd minute, with Luis Carlos making no mistake. At that point, we were the dominant side, and an equalizer seemed inevitable.
Despite our efforts, the halftime whistle blew with the score still at 1-2. We started the second half brightly, but a costly defensive error gifted Villena their third goal in the 56th minute. Our defensive frailties were exposed yet again in the 79th minute, as we conceded another soft goal to fall 1-4 behind.
Although Abdul grabbed a late consolation goal in the 85th minute, there was to be no miraculous comeback this time. Villena deservedly claimed all three points, completing a league double over us this season.
Villena, once the early-season whipping boys, have transformed their season. Although they remain in the final relegation spot, their current form suggests they could escape the drop. A key factor in their resurgence has been their takeover by a Dutch group, who brought in an entirely new squad of young, fast, and aggressive players that are now clicking together.
As for us, this defeat drops us to 7th place with 35 points.
Next Match: This weekend, we travel to Santa Pola for Match Day 24. The game will be played on Sunday morning at 11:30 AM.
