The Councillor for Social Welfare, Agustina Rodríguez, presented the planned activities for the commemoration of the International Day of the Roma People, which will be celebrated on April 8.
As part of the 2025 Year of the Roma People in Spain, she highlighted the opportunity to recognize and celebrate the cultural, social, and linguistic impact of the Roma community on national culture.
She also emphasized the importance of acknowledging the historical memory of this community, which has suffered centuries of persecution and social exclusion, and addressing the ongoing social inequalities faced by the Roma people.
The aim is to break down the barriers preventing the full social integration of Roma people both locally and nationally.
Rodríguez also recalled that the municipal council unanimously approved in February a commitment to support the Roma community and strengthen local public policies to ensure their full integration into Orihuela’s social, educational, cultural, and labor sectors.
As part of the celebration, the Social Welfare Department has organized a video screening on the 600th anniversary of the Roma People in Spain, set for Sunday, April 6, at 7:30 p.m. at the La Lonja Auditorium.
This will be followed by a manifesto reading, a flamenco performance, and other surprises. These activities are coordinated in collaboration with the Plataforma Unión Gitana association.
Additionally, Rodríguez announced that the department plans to inaugurate a monument dedicated to the Roma people, honoring their cultural legacy and contribution to the municipality.
Meanwhile, the department is conducting a participatory diagnosis on the situation of the Roma community in Orihuela to develop the “Orihuela Includes” plan. This initiative aims to combat hate speech and improve the quality of life for vulnerable groups, including the Roma community.
The project is progressing, with a group of Roma people from various backgrounds contributing to ensure the findings are representative of the community’s views. The plan will guide future actions to promote full inclusion.
