The city of Orihuela has once again hosted the start of the Senda del Poeta, a cultural hiking route paying tribute to poet Miguel Hernández. In its 28th edition, thousands of participants from across Spain gathered to walk the 68-kilometer trail.

The event, organized by the Orihuela Youth Department, was inaugurated with a ceremony featuring Mayor Pepe Vegara, Youth Councilor Anabel García, and representatives from the Valencian Youth Institute (IVAJ) and the Miguel Hernández Foundation.

The route traces key locations in Hernández’s life, beginning at Colegio de Santo Domingo, where he developed his literary identity. The mayor highlighted the poet’s global legacy, stating that Orihuela would not be the same without Miguel Hernández.

A special recognition was awarded to Miguel Poveda Toledano as Senderista del Año 2025 for his dedication to the event. Since 2004, he has traveled over 2,000 km from Ourense to Orihuela yearly to honor the poet.

The event also featured a unique rap performance by Arkano, blending Hernández’s poetry with modern music.

The three-day journey (March 28-30) passes through Cox, Elche, and Alicante, marking Hernández’s personal and historical milestones. Local authorities ensure safety throughout the event, reaffirming Orihuela as the heart of this cultural tradition.
