The Ministry of Health and the Orihuela Council have endorsed the suitability of a plot of land for the construction of a new hospital.
The Council has approved a collaboration agreement with the Generalitat Valenciana, through the Ministry of Health, to jointly plan healthcare services in the Orihuela health department. This agreement addresses the increasing demand for healthcare due to the growing population, particularly in Orihuela Costa, where the current healthcare infrastructure is at risk of saturation.
The area’s population growth and geographic dispersion have highlighted the urgent need to strengthen the healthcare network to ensure quality and accessible care for all citizens. The Orihuela City Council has made available a 33,247 m² municipal plot in Lomas de Cabo Roig to develop a healthcare project that complements the current public health system.
Vega Baja Hospital, currently the main hospital in the Orihuela health department and directly managed by the Ministry of Health, has seen an increase in patient load in recent years.
The Hospital has seen a rise in demand, especially during the summer months when the population can reach one million. This situation makes expanding hospital capacity crucial to avoid overcrowding and ensure proper healthcare coverage.
To address this, both the Orihuela City Council and the Generalitat Valenciana have expressed their intention to build a privately financed and managed hospital. This new facility will ease the pressure on the public health system, decentralize services, and improve access to specialized medical care.
The hospital must include emergency services, inpatient units, outpatient specialty consultations, and advanced diagnostic equipment.
The City Council will launch a public competition to select the best proposal for constructing and managing the hospital. The Ministry of Health will oversee the project’s technical, functional, and healthcare standards. The competition will prioritize proposals that offer modern infrastructure, cutting-edge technology, and adequate capacity to meet the growing demand.
Both administrations agree that the selected municipal plot is ideal for the new hospital, and the City Council will ensure the necessary services, including transportation and utilities, are in place. A technical commission will be formed to oversee the entire process, from planning to implementation, ensuring effective coordination and resolution of any issues.
The project also includes coordination with the private healthcare sector to complement the public healthcare network, avoiding duplication and optimizing resources. This public-private partnership will strengthen healthcare services in Orihuela and surrounding areas, improving quality and accessibility for both residents and visitors.
