The PSOE, through councillor Juan López Moreno, has proposed a motion for the upcoming plenary session urging the PP-VOX government in Orihuela to create a Civic Nightlife Committee and establish a cultural and leisure agenda for young people.
The motion highlights the lack of accessible cultural and leisure opportunities in the municipality, particularly in rural areas and along the coast, where infrastructure is insufficient. The Youth Department, currently managed by VOX, is criticized for lacking a structured plan and acting more like an event organizer than a municipal service.
Currently, youth entertainment options in Orihuela are limited to occasional events like JUVE and summer cinema, with no stable program. The recent municipal budget also fails to allocate specific funds for youth culture and leisure.
To address this, the PSOE proposes three key measures:
Cultural Youth Card – Offering discounts for cultural and leisure activities organized by the municipality and private companies.
Civic Nightlife Committee – A coordination body including public administration, youth and neighborhood associations, the hospitality sector, local police, and health experts to ensure safe and diverse nightlife options.
Annual Leisure Programming – Incorporating leisure and cultural activities into the Annual Contracting Plan to ensure a consistent schedule of events, such as theatre, cinema, stand-up comedy, and music performances, without relying on sporadic minor contracts.
López Moreno states that Orihuela’s youth deserve inclusive, affordable, and diverse leisure options, not limited to major festivities or financial means. The PSOE hopes to gain support from other political groups to push this motion through.
