The party is urging the Local Government to provide an update on the status of Orihuela’s Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (PMUS), implement measures to improve public transport, and explore options such as on-demand minibuses to enhance connections between rural districts and the coastal area.

Orihuela is one of the largest municipalities in the Valencian Community, which has historically led to significant mobility and connectivity challenges between its various population centres. The current public transport network connects the main urban area with 11 rural districts, but service frequency and connections remain inadequate.

In 2023, the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (PMUS) was approved, outlining key measures to improve public transport, encourage intermodal travel, and promote sustainable mobility. However, no significant actions have been taken so far. The situation has worsened due to the elimination of the Mobility Department by the current administration. Meanwhile, connectivity issues with the rural districts and the coast persist, and Orihuela’s city centre still lacks an efficient urban transport network.

It is urgent to move forward with the implementation of the PMUS, making use of previous studies and incorporating innovative solutions to ensure accessible, efficient, and well-structured mobility across the municipality. This is especially important considering potential future changes, such as the possible closure of the specialty medical centre or the construction of a sports complex, which could create new transportation demands.

In this context, exploring alternatives like on-demand minibuses—successfully implemented in other cities—could significantly improve connectivity in low-density areas, ensuring that all residents have access to a fair and efficient transport network.

Enhancing mobility is essential for territorial cohesion, access to essential services, and economic and social development throughout Orihuela. As Quique Montero, councillor for Cambiemos Orihuela, stated, “Only by truly and effectively connecting all areas of Orihuela can we build a modern, inclusive city with equal opportunities for everyone.”
