During its latest meeting, the Health and Public Health Commission of the FEMP (Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces) presented a comprehensive training schedule aimed at local government staff, focusing on animal welfare legislation and responsible pet ownership.

The initiative includes a series of educational activities covering the protection of companion animals, the prevention of abandonment, and public awareness on responsible care. These efforts stem from an agreement between the FEMP and the General Directorate of Animal Rights, aligned with Law 7/2023 on the protection and welfare of animals. The training will follow the technical guidelines established under this law.

The session was chaired by Lourdes Martín Palanco, Mayor of Gibraleón and President of the Commission, who also led discussions on additional topics, including the development of a protocol to accommodate burial rites for various religious faiths. This initiative is being undertaken in collaboration with the Pluralism and Coexistence Foundation and involves updating existing guidelines to ensure respectful and inclusive funeral practices across denominations.

Attendees also received updates from the FEMP’s animal welfare working group, the National Commission for the Coordination and Monitoring of AIDS Prevention Programs, and the Spanish Network of Healthy Cities, highlighting the organization’s ongoing commitment to public health and community well-being.
